This is most definitely the edition to have at the time of this review. The movies themselves are blu-ray, but the extra features are DVD discs, by design, which is ok. Even with the advances in technology, that's a fairly time and cost intensive process for a budget SF title from twenty years ago. To be clear, this review is for the Lord of the Rings trilogy bluray 15-disc extended edition box set.
unpleasantly irregular, unless in the process, the entire vfx process was redone, start to finish. Watching Babylon 5 on DVD becomes a kind-of-distracting visual experience because of this any shot with vfx components is only available in the original 4:3 NTSC form factor as the final broadcast version, but all the stuff without vfx components has the original 16:9 film masters to pull from this results in nice image quality, until a shot comes where vfx are involved, at which point, the source has to switch to a pan-n-scan crop from the lower-quality broadcast version everything gets significantly blurrier, and we often lose the tops and bottoms of frames. It was long, but while watching it, it didnt feel long.

The hard-drives-and-infrastructure to preserve a seasons' worth of data would have cost about as much back in the day as another full episode of the show there was no simple 'put it on amazon cloud' or 'stick it in a dropbox' option available back in 1993. For those saying the movie was too long, I would not say that at all. For a show set on a space station with energy guns and so on, there's a whole lot of vfx shots simple conversation-in-the-commanders'-office stuff has greenscreen so you can see out the window to the station interior, stuff on the command deck has greenscreen so you can see out the window to the station exterior, any time certain species of aliens take their encounter suits off, there's vfx, any time anyone fires a weapon, there's vfx, any time we see spaceships, there's vfx, and so on, and so on, and all the data to build those vfx shots are gone. The vfx pipeline, cutting-edge digital as it was for the day, was kinda clunky, and none of the original vfx files survived.

Their original film was, as I understand it, preserved they're even in 16:9 instead of 4:3 like most TV of the era, because JMS was hella forward-looking and saw widescreen formats coming. There are a couple of Blu-only extras, including the Costa Botes documentaries, which were available on the original DVD releases and a downloadable digital copy (you'll get a download code in the case, not an extra disc with a digital movie).
Unfortunately, it doesn't offer a date as to when exactly it will start shipping, but it does confirm that the special features selection will be the same as the DVD releases, which have been around for the better part of a decade.
